| “Whenever… hole up behind closed doors. But not my mom. She’d head…in this shit. She was unwavering in the face of danger.”(p.13) | italics, comparing with other neighbors,“face of danger”, | This quote emphasizes how fearless and determined Trevor’s mother is to do what she had planned to do, even with the riots that everybody hides from and fears. Moreover, Trevor’s mother gives the rioters “a look”, and this is often a higher positioned person looking downat another and signing. Thus, even by adding meaning to it using italics, the author shows the fearlessness and grasp for independence even from the riot blockages. Moreover, the author phrases the rioters and blockades as “aface of danger”. This shows how even in the face of danger, the mother shows no fear or panic, just determination to arrive where she wants to be. Also, the author wrote how other, “normal”people act, hiding and panicking, then saying “not her” and showing herrebellion. This makes the readers feelhow fearless the mother really is compared to other people. |
| “In the white…with the white people.”(p.57) | repetition, “white world”, Short sentence→ “She didn’t care” | This quote also further shows the mother’s rebellion to the white society’s oppression and racist views against black people, as the mother chooses to sit right next to other white people without a word, even though they are the only black people out of all of everybody else, who are white. Moreover, the author says: “She didn’t care.”, showing how, even in the “white world”, she can boldly act as she wants without having to get a white person’s consent. Moreover, the author phrases the other people in the church as “white people”, making them feel like a different species, distancing them from the black society and people. Thus, by being able to just sit with such distant and powerful people, the author shows the mother’s boldness and fearlessness. |
“My mom, however, was a rebel.”(p.23) | Sentence structure→ make more emphasis→ “mom, however”, not “however, my mom” I identified his mother→ rebel→ more clear but emphasized. | This quote shows how the mother, unlike anyone else, and a rebel that goes against the oppression that enforces stereotypes and racism against them.
